Mexican renter intimidating landlord
We had a mouse problem that got pretty serious and though we asked for months for something to be done, but the landlord refused. Now the oven doesn't stop heating up when turned on. We told him about this and he said he would fix it if we paid him 0. My boyfriend tried speaking with him about not fulfilling his responsibilities as a landlord and that he fears we are living in an unsafe and dangerous environment.
We spoke with a previous tenant (there is an apt next door) and she informed us that she moved out because the landlord wouldn't do anything about her mouse problem. The landlord threatened to evict us and became very hostile.
If the matter is decided in federal court, the judge may also award punitive damages to aggrieved persons.
The Federal Fair Housing Act, established in 1968, protects civil rights in housing and prohibits housing providers, including condominium associations, from denying housing to anyone based on \a person’s national origin, sex, race, religion, or color.
I do feel I must mention that our landlord is an alcoholic and is often drunk when we speak to him.
His "shack" is where he comes to drink beer while he is out tending to his properties.
He threatened to make my boyfriend sign his new lease which explicitly bans GSD's (Our old leases do not have a breed ban).
He later apologized for this and we didn't have any issues for a few weeks.
The apartment we live in now is only in my boyfriend's name.
